Analyzing the contents of the journalistic articles of Magdi Mehana that were published during the year 2007

Magdi Mehana wrote 326 articles during the year of 2007. The number of words written in such articles is 127801. Such articles covered the problems and the cases of citizens. Today, on 13th March 2008, FDHRD is issuing its report named “Magdi Mehana …. Popular national journalist”.

Mr. Said Abdel Hafez, the head of FDHRD, said the report aims at highlighting the achievements of the deceased journalist, Magdi Mehana, who did not break the journalism’s Code of Conduct during his professional life and he used to do fair criticism putting into consideration the freedom to the right of opinion and expression. He used also to be the honest mediator between citizens and high profile figures . This report is considered an acknowledgment by the civil society of what the deceased Magdi Mehana has achieved and how he was supporting civil society. Also, the report aims at letting the new generation from young media personals and journalists and the Mass Communication students know the importance of practicing ones rights without violating the rights of others.

The report is divided into two sections. The report analyzes the contents of the articles written by Magdi Mehana and also analyzes the articles he used to write in a column named “ Forbidden” in the last page of El Masry El Youm newspaper.

The result of the analyses was as follows:

First: Citizenship is one of the concepts that are used a lot in the writings of Magdi Mehana as it was repeated 411 times: It was observed that citizenship is one of the concepts that are used a lot in the writings of Magdi Mehana as it was repeated 411 times during the year of 2007. Then he used the word” corruption” 159 while the word :democracy” came at the fifth top as it was used 134 times.

Second : The internal and national cases are one of the cases that Magdi Mehana approached in his writings as he wrote 305 articles on internal and national cases in the year of 2007 . In addition, he only wrote 57 articles on external and international cases and therefore the total number of cases he wrote in this regard is 352 cases.

Third: The performance of the Egyptian government is one of the areas where Magdi Mehana was interested in:
The report referred to the writings of Magdi Mehana on the performance of the government and the constitutional amendments. He wrote 21 articles on the policies of the Egyptian government and its performance. He also wrote 20 articles on the constitutional amendments. In addition, he wrote 15 articles on the policies of National Democratic Party. On the international sphere, the Palestinian cause is one of the causes that he wrote about as he wrote 8 articles on this cause while he wrote 57 articles on the Egyptian Diplomatic performance and he wrote 6 articles on the cause of Lebanon.

Fourth: He published the view opinions of 62 readers through the letters they sent.
Magdi Mehana enabled 62 readers to express their opinion through publishing their letters and such letters were as follows: 33 letters included political issues, 9 letters included issues related to education, 4 letters were on complaints of citizens and were addressing ministers and 3 letters were on citizenship’s issues.

Fifth: The most popular persons that Magdi Mehana has addressed were Mr. President , Hosni Mubarak and Mr. Mofeed Shehab:
The report indicates that Magdi Mehana has addressed popular persons for 75 times. Mr Mubarak was addressed 45 times and then the Prime Minster , Mr. Ahmed Nazeef was addressed 23 times while Dr. Mofeed Shehab was addressed 18 times and Mr. Fathi Soroor was addressed 15 times while Mr. Safwat El Shereef was addressed 1 time only.

It must be noted that he addressed such popular persons because they gave their statements in media or because they announced their stance towards specific issues in front of the public opinion. Magdi Mehana used to comment positively or negatively on such announcements or stances. Sometimes, he used to state such announcements and highlight the comments they received.

The second section of the report analyzes the articles he used to write in a column named “ Forbidden” in the last page of El Masry El Youm newspaper.
